Attendance at Great Y Circus performances has become a family tradition. It is a tradition as well for circus alumni who have watched their own children and grandchildren pursue the same childhood dream.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe Great Y Circus was founded in 1929 by YMCA Director Roy Coble, a former Ringling Brothers Barnum \u0026amp; Bailey performer. Except for years around World War II, the circus has performed almost continuously, making it one of the oldest community circuses in the world. This year marks its sixty-seventh edition.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eOver the years, the circus has grown tremendously from its birth as a YMCA family fun night. It continues to emphasize family values, responsibility, commitment, self-confidence, self-discipline, teamwork, dedication, trust, skill, showmanship, and fun. Past and present performers have traveled across the globe to entertain a variety of audiences. Many alumni have gone on to become professional performers and still return to help teach circus skills to the next generation of entertainers.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eToday, the Great Y Circus is co-sponsored by the Redlands YMCA and the Community Circus Arts Corporation, a California non-profit public benefit corporation. The Great Y Circus is primarily run by volunteers. This includes all aspects of the program that run throughout the year—training, costuming, and more.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe Great Y Circus season starts in September when performers of all ages begin learning skills in classes held at the Redlands YMCA. The circus is non-competitive and classes focus on group and individual skills. The season culminates in nine shows usually held during the first three weekends in May.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eClose to 300 performers and countless volunteers participate each year in a variety of artistically choreographed acts that include sparkling costumes, theatrical lighting, and Broadway-style music.
