Two interpretive concepts arose through this'study. First, while having to endure soloistic embellishments of his arias while composing opera in Italy, Handel refused to allow them upon his return to England and composing oratorios. He felt his melodies, in their simplistic beauty, could stand on their own. Second, when interpreting Messiah's many choruses, the conductor and singers must adhere to the composer's unique brilliance of writing in seven different styles: renaissance, baroque (energy-based, almost jazz feeling), the grand anthem foreshadowing the intense depth of later composers, triple-meter dance rhythms, turba dramatic power, duet texture of previously written materials, and the purity of a cappella singing. The size of Handel's choirs and orchestras varied depending upon the situation and available forces.
