His output helped define early 19th century Italian opera alongside contemporaries such as Rossini and Bellini. Donizetti's works frequently demand agile technique and expressive phrasing from soloists while providing memorable ensemble writing. His music remains a core part of the operatic repertory for singers and aficionados of lyrical Italian opera.

Belisario is one of Donizetti's lesser-known score offerings and this release presents a live radio performance recorded in Venice in 1969. The two-CD set features Leyla Gencer and Giuseppe Taddei with the Orchestra and Chorus of Teatro la Fenice di Venezia conducted by Gianandrea Gavazzeni. The edition captures the immediacy and atmosphere of a live performance with an historic radio sound and roughly two hours of music. It is a valuable document for listeners interested in dramatic bel canto and period live recordings.

Orchestra and Chorus Teatro la Fenice di Venezia
Conductor: Gianandrea Gavazzeni
Total playing time: 2 HRS 06'32''
High quality radio recording, Venice 1969
Compact Music GmbH - Luxembourg
Made in EEC
Booklet included (libretto enclosed)
Live recording

For CD Player
