His first triumph, Anyuta, based on a Chekhov short story, is a marvelously theatrical work replete with Chekhovian flourishes. Fragments of a Biography, by contrast, has no such literary moorings. It is a largely abstract, memory ballet set to the smoldering strains of the Argentinian tango. A narrative thread emerges in the woman in white who appears as the distant beloved, the ideal distillation of the protagonist's former lost loves.

For this work, Vasiliev selected some of the Bolshoi's greatest dancers, including his long-time partner both onstage and in life, Ekaterina Maximova, as the Woman in White. She is joined by stars Andris Liepa, Nina Timofeyeva, Aleksei Fadeyev, and Vasiliev himself in a seductive, emotionally charged performance.

Vasiliev and Maximova also star in Trapeze, a ballet created for film in 1970 with choreography by Natalia Ryzhenko and an early score by Prokofiev. The colorful circus setting has been described as Fellini-esque, though the narrative lacks the Italian filmmaker's sardonic bent. Trapeze tells the story of the triumph of innocence: Maximova is moving as the young girl drawn to the world of the circus who eventually becomes part of it, while Vasiliev excels as the clown who tries to win her.

Prokofiev wrote the score for Trapeze in 1924 while in Paris. Commissioned for a small ballet troupe that lacked funds for a full orchestra, the work was scored for a quintet. Prokofiev sought to make an impression in a city captivated by Stravinsky, and sections of Trapeze are clearly reminiscent of Stravinsky's neo-classical style.

Featured Artists:

Ekaterina Maximova

Vladimir Vasiliev

Andris Liepa

Nina Timofeyeva

Aleksei Fadeychev

DVD Bonus: Scene from the ballet Anyuta (4:58) — Danced by Ekaterina Maximova; Choreography by Vladimir Vasiliev.

Technical Details:
Audio: Mono
Video: 4:3 / Color / NTSC
Region: Code 0 (Playable All Regions)
Subtitles: None
Running Time: Main program: 77:00 / Bonus: 4:58

For DVD Player (North American NTSC)

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0083/0377/1710/files/2026320124625742scan_08e784b9-efb7-4b8e-a906-14d984bacebb.jpg?v=1774395325
