His gift for songlike melody and inventive harmonic progressions gave his string quartets a distinctive blend of lyricism and dramatic depth. Schubert wrote across forms and produced both compact movements and expansive structures that push traditional tonal boundaries. His quartets range from intimate early works to late masterpieces that influenced generations of composers and performers.

This Deutsche Grammophon Collectors Edition pairs Schubert chamber works with performances by the Melos Quartet, presenting a wide survey of quartets across six discs. The set collects historic Polydor recordings issued in the mid twentieth century and reissued here in a compiled edition, offering both rarities and core repertoire. Interpretations emphasize warmth of tone, clarity of ensemble and an informed approach to Schubert textural and harmonic detail. The six disc configuration provides lengthy playing times per disc and includes such well known works as the quartets titled "Rosamunde" and "Death and the Maiden".

Collectors Edition.
