He rose to prominence in the 1970s and 1980s with a powerful voice that often addressed political and social issues. His work sits at the crossroads of spoken-word performance and contemporary R&B, and he is frequently cited as an early influence on hip hop and modern protest music. Scott-Heron often partnered with forward looking producers and musicians to create arrangements that underline his message without overpowering the voice.

Moving Target captures Scott-Heron in a late phase of his early catalog where streamlined funk grooves and soulful arrangements carry incisive, reflective lyrics. The album features driving tracks like "Fast Lane" and extended pieces such as "Black History / The World" that showcase both concise songwriting and expansive, thematic exploration. Production on this edition credits collaboration with Malcolm Cecil, resulting in a clear, focused sound that balances rhythm, melody and the spoken-word edge that defines much of Scott-Heron work. This reissue edition presents the material with updated mastering and packaging while preserving the original creative intent.

Produced by Gil Scott-Heron and Malcolm Cecil for Spice Inc.
© 1982 Arista Records, © 1998 BMG Music.
Distributed by BMG.
