This is a people who have been systematically oppressed and persecuted for 3,000 years, and yet today over 200 million so called “Untouchables” are still subject to extreme poverty, discrimination and aggression.

These three films about the Dalits were all researched and filmed in India. Two of them portray everyday life of Dalits in villages. They reflect the inspiring work of OM India and others who are working to provide previously unheard of educational opportunities for Dalit young people. Many in India believe this initiative of education in English, provided in a spiritual framework, will promote a new freedom for the Dalits.

The love of God, such a cliche in the West, means so much to young people who have been taught from the cradle upwards that their lives matter nothing and that they are without hope in this world. Indian Christians are providing this hope both in word and deed.

Hope for the Children shows life in Dalit villages through the eyes of children and explains something of the history of untouchability and these new educational opportunities; the film features, among others, the Human Rights Advocate Baroness Caroline Cox, Deputy Leader of the House of Lords.

Kancha Ilaiah in Conversation is an in depth face-to-face interview with one of the world’s leading authorities on the Dalits, and a passionate appeal to the West to support the Dalit cause. It is suitable for more detailed personal study or for use in schools, churches and similar settings.

The third film is a shorter version of Hope for the Children, sharing some of its footage and with new material; it is also useful for showing to small groups and public gatherings.

All profits from the sale of this DVD will go to OM India Appeal - Dalit Education Centres

“Nowhere in human history has one group – the upper castes of India – been able to oppress so many for so long.”

Kancha Ilaiah

WARNING: This is a PAL DVD and may not play in North American DVD players.
