There are no pulldown menus or numerical input fields. Instead, Photo Soap employs a remote-control palette that provides access to tools and help.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe program is divided into separate \"rooms\" for performing a variety of functions. For example, activity begins in the In Room, where images are selected or acquired prior to beginning work. An unlimited number of images can be imported here and managed in albums, which serve as a catalog system and support offline image storage. (Images residing offline appear grayed out on the screen.)\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe Prep, Tone and Color Rooms offer features for modifying a photo's colors and performing cropping, sharpening, cloning and red-eye reduction. Another nice aspect is that tools such as brushes and erasers appear as their real-life counterparts, rather than as iconic representations, making it easier for the user to select the desired tools (see illustration, left). Tools can be kept in a drawer or dumped onto the desktop (a metaphor a journalist can appreciate).\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIn the Detail Room, it is possible to \"heal\" or correct discrepancies, such as scratches or wrinkles in an image. The program sports a sophisticated cloning tool that allows you to work in the luminance channel to apply the texture of one part of an image to another part. Other features control opacity and \"Goo-like\" distortion. Photo Soap also supports pressure-sensitive pens.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eFor visual feedback, the program depicts brushes moving up and down to replicate changes in pressure. The Finish Room features access to 150 backgrounds, edges, scenes and objects that can be combined with the current image to create a customized layout, such as a post card. Features here include many of the items mentioned above-color adjustments, cropping, sharpening, etc. The program comes bundled with 150 images and backgrounds.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eFiles can be saved in TIFF, PCT, BMP and FlashPix formats. Photo Soap is limited to RGB output and doesn't support the export of GIF images. To be available this month, Photo Soap will be priced at $50. We were quite impressed with Photo Soap.
