Director Vera Stroyeva's approach to the opera is distinctly cinematic. Her atmospheric handling of the crowd scenes, juxtaposed with startling close-ups, is strongly reminiscent of the work of her celebrated predecessor, Sergei Eisenstein.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe production is dominated by Alexander Pirogov in the title role. In the tradition of the greatest of Russian bassos, Pirogov delivers a magnificently sung performance with a keen dramatic edge.
