The ensemble brought together U.S. jazz stars and Cuban masters to create a warm, rhythmic sound that blends straight-ahead jazz phrasing with Afro-Cuban percussion and song forms. Hargrove's work with Crisol emphasized melodic improvisation over rich, danceable grooves and highlighted his lyrical tone and commitment to cross-cultural collaboration. The group became known for featuring top Cuban musicians and for introducing Latin jazz elements to mainstream jazz audiences.

Habana, recorded and released in 1997 on Verve/PolyGram, captures Crisol at the height of its fusion approach, pairing original compositions and spirited arrangements with classic Latin forms. The album features extended tracks and lively ensemble writing that showcase percussion textures, piano montunos, and strong solo statements from the frontline. Standout pieces range from energetic mambo and Afro-Cuban numbers to tender ballads, all arranged to spotlight both the bandleader and his Cuban collaborators. The recording is notable for its roster of prominent players and its polished production that preserves the immediacy of the performances.

Personnel:
Roy Hargrove (trumpet)

David Sánchez (tenor sax)

Chucho Valdés (piano)

John Benitez (contrabass)

Horacio "Negro" Hernández (drums)

Miguel "Anga" Díaz (congas)

Jose Luis "Changuito" Quintana (timbales)

Frank Lacy (trombone)

Gary Bartz (alto sax)

Jorge Reyes (electric bass)

Russell Malone (guitar)

Label: Verve / PolyGram Records
Cat No: SACDVER25
© & ℗ 1997 PolyGram Records, Inc.

Tracklist

1
Oh-Mi Seh Yeh

9:59

2
Una Mas

8:06

3
Dream Traveler

5:23

4
Nusia's Poem

6:20

5
Mr. Bruce

5:30

6
Ballad for the Children

4:52

7
The Mountaings

8:07

8
Afrodisia

4:46

9
Mambo for Roy

11:01

10
Oh-Mi Seh (Reprise)

6:22

For CD Player
