The Southern African Regional Science Initiative — SAFARI 2000 — is an international sci-ence initiative aimed at developing a better understanding of the southern African earth-atmos-phere-human system. Initial plans for SAFARI 2000 were developed in 1998 at workshops involving scientists from southern Africa, the United States, and Europe. The goal of SAFARI 2000 is to identify and understand the relationships between the physi-cal, chemical, biological, and anthropogenic processes that underlie the biogeophysical and bio-geochemical systems of southern Africa. Particular emphasis is being placed on biogenic, pyro-genic, and anthropogenic emissions; their characterization and quantification; their transport and transformations in the atmosphere; their influence on regional climate and meteorology; their deposition; and their resultant effects on ecosystems. To accomplish this, participants are: • integrating remote sensing, computational modeling, airborne sampling and ground-based studies; • linking the biological, physical and chemical components of the regional ecosystems by integrating them within the semi-closed atmospheric gyre persistent over the region; • combining the expertise and knowledge base of regional and international scientists. SAFARI 2000 builds upon the success of the Southern African Fire-Atmosphere Research Initiative in 1992 (SAFARI-92). SAFARI-92 demonstrated that a) it is feasible to characterize, quantify, and validate estimates of regional emissions, and b) critical gaps remain in our under-standing of the fate and impacts of the emissions on the functioning of the regional land-atmos-phere systems. Programmatically, SAFARI 2000 is an organizational umbrella designed to maximize the overall efficiency and effectiveness of various environmental studies occurring in the southern Africa region between 1999 to 2001. These studies range relatively short-term intensive meas-urement projects to those which are long-term monitoring or modeling efforts. SAFARI 2000 is making extensive use of several new Earth observation satellites, including NASA's Terra, Aqua, Earth Observing-1 (ED-1), Landsat-7 ETM+, SeaWiFS, and TRMM. Data from traditional sensors, such as the NOAA polar orbiters (AVHRR), TOMS, and EUMETSAT's Meteosat, are also being used. In turn, the Project's ground- and aircraft-based data sets are being used to validate the new remote sensing products. 2

For Windows (32-bit Systems) / Mac (Power Macintosh: OS 9 or Below) [*Please review compatibility/platform sections in 'What You Get']

https://www.neverdiemedia.com/products/safari-2000-southern-african-regional-science-initiative-volume-1
