DELUXE

Restored Masterwork

Having revolutionized film editing with masterpieces like POTEMKIN and STRIKE, Soviet director Sergei Eisenstein emigrated west to test the American film industry. Ostracized from Hollywood, Eisenstein, Grigory Alexandrov and photographer Eduard Tisse (at the urging of author Upton Sinclair) traveled to Mexico to film a highly stylized documentary exploring the people and volatile social climate of the country. A lack of funds prevented the film's completion and Eisenstein was unable to edit it. In 1979 Alexandrov, working from Eisenstein's notes and sketches, assembled a definitive version of the film that comes closest to the director's original vision.

A blend of the ethnographic, the political, the scenic and the surreal, QUE VIVA MEXICO! remains a brilliant and influential work. With sequences devoted to the Edenic land of Tehuantepec, the savage majesty of the bullfight, the struggles of the noble peon and the hypnotic imagery of the Day of the Dead, QUE VIVA MEXICO! offers a vivid tapestry of Mexican life and stands alongside Eisenstein's other legendary works.

Also included on this DVD are ROMANCE SENTIMENTALE (1930), an attempt to apply Soviet montage theories to sound and visual editing, and the remarkable rediscovery MISERY AND FORTUNE OF WOMAN (1929), a stirring dramatization of the plight of working-class women that helped promote safe ob/gyn care in Europe.

Supplemental Features Include:

ROMANCE SENTIMENTALE (20 min.)
Eisenstein's early experiment in sound and image, created in collaboration with Alexandrov and Tisse.

MISERY AND FORTUNE OF WOMAN (approx. 20 min. excerpt)
An ultra-rare 1929 film by Eisenstein, Alexandrov and Tisse that uses Soviet montage to address women's health and social conditions.

QUE VIVA CLIPPINGS
A sampling of texts related to the production and release of QUE VIVA MEXICO!

Credits & Technical Information:
Country: Mexico/Russia/US
Year(s): 1931 / 1979
Format: B&W, 85 min., 1.33:1
Directed by: Sergei Eisenstein
Produced by: Grigory Alexandrov
Cinematography: Eduard Tisse
Reconstructed by: Grigory Alexandrov and Nikita Orlov
Produced for DVD by: Bret Wood

For DVD Player (North American NTSC)
