Over thousands of years, the tribes of this region have developed a complex set of spiritual beliefs that continues today. These beliefs are reflected in songs, creating a unique oral tradition that is different from many other Native American traditions. The songs are arranged in a series, which may be based on an incident or story connected to creation and may take anywhere from one to four nights to retell.

Today these traditions face a crisis of seemingly insurmountable proportion. The language is quickly being forgotten and the valuable lessons of traditional beliefs are being disregarded. Everyday life and the influx of Western culture are eroding the foundation of traditional ways of life. How will we preserve this loss? Can we fortify our spiritual beliefs to withstand these pressures and keep our ways alive?

In Songs of the Colorado you are taken to the lower Colorado River region to meet the people who sing these songs and to witness the struggle to keep this tradition alive. The film seeks to educate and promote greater awareness about the history, culture, and relationships of the southern Hokan-speaking tribes of Southern California, southwestern Arizona, and Baja California, Mexico.

Directed & Edited: Daniel Golding

Produced by: Ah-Mut Pipa Foundation

In association with: Hokan Media Productions

Artwork: Kenrick J.
