The tracks are a culmination of music from the original Edison record label like John Phillip Sousa's Band playing The Yankee Shuffle recorded in 1906 to Thomas himself playing a piano solo recorded in 1919. There are also many famous speeches like P.T. Barnum's Farewell to the People of Great Britain from 1890, and Theodore Roosevelt's Social and Industrial Justice speech from 1919. To top it off, the sampler also contain the very first words ever recorded into a phonograph - Edison reciting Mary Had a Little Lamb from 1877, making the disc the most historically significant CD yet created. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe origins of this disc go back to the early 1980s when the Edison Historical site, in West Orange, New Jersey, approached Sony requesting assistance in renovating part of their site. The Edison site wanted to include modern audio technology whose roots were in Edison's inventions. Because Sony was a leader in audio technology, Sony agreed to sponsor an exhibit featuring their first CD player. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eFrom these efforts the idea for the Edison CD Sampler was born. Akira Suzuki and Harry Machida coordinated the efforts on the Sony side deciding this sampler would become an inaugural souvenir for the opening of Digital Audio Disc Corporation's CD plant, soon to come on-line. Edward Jay Pershy, supervisory museum curator of the Edison site at that time, was responsible for providing narration and creating the master. Sony would provide the mechanism for manufacturing the disc. \u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe disc was manufactured at the Digital Audio Disc Corporation plant in Terre Haute, Indiana, and distributed at the plant's grand opening that September. The disc was given to attendees along with the \"red-disc\" copy of Bruce Springsteen's Born in the U.S.A. (NOT INCLUDED WITH THIS ITEM). A rare 18 track version of the Edison CD Sampler was pressed three years later in Austria for the opening of Digital Audio Disc Corporation's plant in that country on July 29, 1987. Stamped on the plastic ring is “Made in USA – Digital Audio Disc Corp.”, and the matrix code is “DIDX-135 11A2″.  Beneath the catalog number is the DADC plant ‘D’ logo and the words “Manufactured by Digital Audio Disc Corp. Terre Haute, Indiana, USA”.
