These sessions explore the theological, social, and moral tensions within the early Church and draw out lessons relevant to contemporary faith communities. He draws on the Gospels and Acts, undertakes a close reading of the Pauline letters along with other sources, and reflects on both personal and mechanistic images of the Church.

One of Raymond’s observations about Paul’s letters captures a central theme of the retreat: someone who understands the church’s problems yet still affirms its holiness demonstrates a theological grasp of how the church participates in Christ’s sanctity despite human weakness. For Raymond, that insight makes these letters theologically sound and deeply powerful.

About Father Raymond

Father Raymond was a world-renowned biblical scholar and prolific author of nearly 40 books, many focused on New Testament commentary. Ordained in 1953, he taught for close to four decades—principally at St. Mary’s Seminary and University in Baltimore and later at Union Theological Seminary in New York City. He served twice on the Pontifical Biblical Commission, most recently appointed by Pope John Paul II in 1996, and led several prominent scholarly organizations, including The Catholic Biblical Association and the Society of Biblical Literature. He received more than 30 honorary doctorates from Catholic and Protestant institutions around the globe. After retiring in 1990, he remained active in writing and lecturing. Father Raymond passed away on August 8, 1998.

For CD Player

https://www.neverdiemedia.com/products/the-growth-of-the-early-church-a-retreat-led-by-raymond-e-brown-part-one-incomplete-6-disc-set
