Across the late 1950s and early 1960s Coltrane pushed the boundaries of bebop into modal and avant-garde territories, assembling a classic quartet that included McCoy Tyner on piano, Reggie Workman on bass and Elvin Jones on drums. His music combined technical mastery with a searching, expressive quality that reshaped modern jazz and inspired generations of players and listeners. Coltrane's recordings from this era are celebrated both for their ensemble interplay and for their visionary soloing.

This two-disc collection assembles the complete Africa/Brass sessions, presenting the original orchestrated tracks alongside alternate takes and extended versions that document Coltrane's expansive approach. The sessions feature brass and orchestral arrangements and are notable for their bold textures and the presence of large ensemble voicings arranged for Coltrane's compositions and reinterpretations. The set highlights seminal pieces such as "Africa" and Coltrane's unique reinterpretation of "Greensleeves," showing both studio experimentation and the quartet's deep group rapport. Reissued in 1995 with additional material and careful remastering, this edition provides a comprehensive look at a pivotal project in Coltrane's catalog.

Personnel:
John Coltrane, tenor saxophone
McCoy Tyner, piano
Reggie Workman, bass
Elvin Jones, drums

Orchestra conducted by Eric Dolphy

Original sessions produced by Creed Taylor
Reissue produced by Michael Cuscuna

Tracklist

DISC ONE

1
Greensleeves
9:57

2
Song of the Underground Railroad
6:44

3
Greensleeves (alternate take)
10:53

4
The Damned Don't Cry
7:34

5
Africa (first version)
14:08

DISC TWO

1
Blues Minor
7:20

2
Africa (alternate take)
16:08

3
Africa
16:29

For CD Player

https://www.neverdiemedia.com/products/the-john-coltrane-quartet-the-complete-africa-brass-sessions-2-disc-set
