Experience the resonating sound of 44 hand-blown glass bowls mounted in an ingenious arrangement that makes it possible to play music.

Named the glass armonica, its heavenly sound transports listeners to a place of calm serenity. Invented by Benjamin Franklin in 1761, the glass armonica is a series of glass bowls mounted on a horizontal rod. The bowls taper in size and are played like wine glasses as they spin.

Mozart and Beethoven composed for the instrument, and Marie Antoinette learned to play it. Franz Mesmer used his armonica to "mesmerize" his patients. George Washington heard the glass armonica played in concert in Williamsburg in 1765 and wrote in his diary that it was "the most captivating instrument I have ever heard."

By 1790 the instrument had become very popular in Europe, particularly in Germany (where Mozart heard it). However, by about 1820 musical fashions had changed, and the glass armonica fell out of favor. This elegant instrument virtually vanished for hundreds of years.

For DVD Player (North American NTSC)
