Recruits go through a series of rigorous simulation exercises that virtually simulate the look and feel of real space combat piloting. Only those who prove their skills repeatedly with the simulator will advance to actual flight training and eventually enter the service. Wing Commander: Academy offers you the experience of academy training, using limited ships and weaponry from the Wing Commander series.

The level editor, one of two parts of the game, allows you to design missions based around a series of waypoints, and place Confederation or hostile alien Kilrathi space fighters on the mission map. After loading the created mission in the game engine, you then fly through it as one of the pilots. For those not interested in mission creation, an option allows for instant dogfighting after setting the number of enemy ships to confront.

The flight engine is based on the solid Wing Commander II flight engine, with a few minor modifications. As good as the basic engine is, though, it doesn't translate to gameplay in Academy since there's no storyline, thus no real sense of accomplishment. Gameplay is simply boring.

The series has several types of mission models, including search and destroy, search and rescue, escort, and so forth; the variety is the ingredient that keeps the games fresh. In Academy, you're limited to using only fighters in mission design and creating variations on the search and destroy theme. Dogfighting is fun but pointless when it has no purpose or storyline to advance. Creating and testing missions may be initially novel and fun, but the long-term effect becomes quickly meaningless when viewed in a vacuum, and the lack of any multiplayer options guarantees bargain bin status.

For DOS/Windows (via DOSBox) [*Please review compatibility/platform sections in 'What You Get']
