Filmed live at the Sydney Opera House, this Australian Opera rendition of Puccini's timeless classic was created by the team behind the acclaimed film Strictly Ballroom: director Baz Luhrmann along with designers Catherine Martin and Bill Marron. They have skillfully crafted a captivating and artistic reinterpretation of the opera, setting it against the backdrop of post-war 1950s Paris and effectively capturing the youthfulness and intensity of the narrative with a genuine sincerity. This opera, divided into four acts, features a libretto by Giuseppe Giacosa and Luigi Illica, based on Henry Murger's novel Scenes de la Vie de Boheme. Presented in Italian with English subtitles, it runs for 112 minutes.
It may be conceivable to encounter someone who knows this rendition of La Bohème yet does not cherish it, but I have yet to meet such a person. "Oh yes," remarked a friend, "that's the good one where everyone is the right age." The youthful energy and freshness of the performers are indeed significant strengths of this production. The delicate portrayal of youthful exuberance and vulnerability is enhanced by the stark contrasts between the extreme poverty experienced by the Parisian bohemians and their carefree way of life. In the realm of DVDs, La Bohème faces stiff competition. There are compelling cases to be made for the Metropolitan Opera's staging or the vocal excellence of the San Francisco production, yet the Australian Opera offers the most authentic connection between the performers and the characters they embody. The overall effect is often moving and at times utterly electrifying.
In this interpretation, the narrative is transposed to 1950s Paris. A layer of existentialism and a sense of absurdity can be perceived in the lifestyle of the young men; however, the underlying message suggests that, despite modern advancements (such as a large neon sign proclaiming "L'Amour"), the essence of bohemian life in the 1950s remained largely unchanged since the 1830s. The performances are commendable throughout, especially those by David Hobson (Rodolfo) and Cheryl Barker (Mimi), with Baz Luhrmann's direction (known for Strictly Ballroom and Moulin Rouge) being particularly exceptional.

Many, if not most, will work on XP or higher with a few quick adjustments. We provide instructions with all items purchased on how to do this adjustment using the Program Compatibility Wizard. If we find out that an item will definately not work on a specific version, we will state it. For DOS games, you may need to play it with a free DOSbox program if the Program Compatibility Wizard does not work.
64-Bit Windows OS Systems:
For 64-bit Operating Systems, older games most likely will NOT work due to 64-bit systems not being able to run 16-bit programming code (most games prior to 2000). For DOS games, you may need to play it with a free DOSbox program.

For Macintosh programs, most older games will need to be run in Classic Environment if you have a MAC OS X 10.0 - 10.4 version. Please research Google on how to do this, or send us a message for information prior to purchasing. If your MAC OS system doesn't support Classic Environment (ie. MAC OS X 10.5 or Higher OR Intel Macs), you will have to try running it using the free program called SheepShaver, but compatibility is not ensured.
