One of the initial partnerships between Gilbert and Sullivan, The Sorcerer is also one of their lesser-known works. In this story of a magical potion that leads an entire village to fall for the wrong individuals, the duo's signature styles are already apparent: a ludicrous storyline resolved in a flash; deadpan operatic mockeries; and vibrant melodies paired with occasionally sardonic lyrics. The show's appeal may have been diminished by shortcomings such as its ending, which unrealistically casts the main character into damnation. However, overall it provides a lively experience, particularly in this rendition, which is the only easily accessible version.
Within a collection of varied quality (the Opera World series of G&S videos from the 1980s), this particular production shines. Nearly all the performers capture Gilbert's comedic essence. The character of John Wellington Wells is portrayed by Clive Revill with the appropriate weight of Dickensian seriousness, complemented by a mischievous sparkle. D'Oyly Carte stalwart Donald Adams exhibits remarkable timing and articulation as Sir Marmaduke, whose overly polite demeanor is no match for Wells's potion. A drawback is Alexander Oliver, who lacks youthful charm as the character of Alexis; Oliver appears lackluster in a vibrant ensemble.
The production does indulge in a few television quirks, such as having the actors address the camera directly. Furthermore, the supernatural effects might seem dated by today's standards, yet this contributes to its charm. From the very first number, filled with earnest and spirited villagers, it becomes clear that you have entered a realm that adheres to its own whimsical rules.

XP, Vista...) will have to be researched by the buyer. Games that came out PRIOR to XP or higher will not specifically state they will work on that release, but only because they came out before those versions were made. Many, if not most, will work on XP or higher with a few quick adjustments. We provide instructions with all items purchased on how to do this adjustment using the Program Compatibility Wizard. If we find out that an item will definately not work on a specific version, we will state it. For DOS games, you may need to play it with a free DOSbox program if the Program Compatibility Wizard does not work.
64-Bit Windows OS Systems:
For 64-bit Operating Systems, older games most likely will NOT work due to 64-bit systems not being able to run 16-bit programming code (most games prior to 2000). For DOS games, you may need to play it with a free DOSbox program.
Macintosh Systems:
For Macintosh programs, most older games will need to be run in Classic Environment if you have a MAC OS X 10.0 - 10.4 version. Please research Google on how to do this, or send us a message for information prior to purchasing. If your MAC OS system doesn't support Classic Environment (ie. MAC OS X 10.5 or Higher OR Intel Macs), you will have to try running it using the free program called SheepShaver, but compatibility is not ensured. Please research prior to purchasing or ask questions.
