MAKING FOAM TOMBSTONES
Do-It-Yourself Tombstones
Creating your own foam tombstones for Halloween decorations might seem challenging at first, but with the right tools and clear instructions, it becomes an enjoyable and rewarding project. Even if you're new to crafting, the process is straightforward and accessible to all skill levels. Using a simple Hot Knife tool and a couple of pieces of polystyrene foam, you can create convincing and spooky tombstone decorations that will elevate your Halloween setup.
The instructional DVD runs for about 25 minutes, during which Laura and Dale guide you calmly and clearly through each step. This makes it easy to follow along at your own pace and ensures your tombstones come out looking great every time.
Step-by-step instructions for making a spooky Halloween Tombstone out of polystyrene foam:
Trace the pattern: Begin by choosing a tombstone design pattern. You can find these online, in craft books, or create your own unique shapes and inscriptions. Lay the pattern on the foam sheet and use a pencil or marker to carefully trace the outline. This step sets the foundation for your tombstone’s shape and size.
Cut the tombstone: Taking a Hot Knife, which is specially designed to cut foam smoothly, cut along the traced lines. The Hot Knife prevents foam from crumbling or creating jagged edges, providing a clean finish. Make sure to work slowly and with steady hands for the best results.
Cut out the elements: After the basic tombstone shape is cut, additional design elements such as crosses, skulls, or lettering can be cut separately. These elements can be raised for a 3D effect, adding depth and realism to your tombstone. Trace these smaller patterns onto thinner foam sheets and cut them carefully using the same Hot Knife technique.
Have fun, be creative: This is your chance to personalize your tombstones! Feel free to experiment with shapes, textures, or add cracks and chips to make them look aged and eerie. Using different foam thicknesses can also add dimension. Creativity here makes your Halloween decorations truly unique and eye-catching.
Stick it together: Once all the pieces are cut and ready, attach your design elements to the main tombstone base. Use an adhesive suitable for foam, such as foam-safe glue or spray adhesive, to ensure the pieces stay in place firmly. Press and hold each piece for a few moments to guarantee a strong bond.
Painting tips: After assembly, painting your tombstone brings it to life. Use acrylic or latex paints as they adhere well to foam and dry quickly. Start with a base coat in gray or stone-like colors. Then, add shading with washes of darker colors to simulate weathering, moss, or dirt. Dry brushing with white or light gray paint highlights edges and raised areas, enhancing the 3D effect. Optionally, you can also use textured spray paints or add details like spider webs, faux moss, or cracks for extra realism.
Additional tips for making foam tombstones:
Safety first: Always work in a well-ventilated area when cutting foam with a Hot Knife, and consider wearing a mask to avoid inhalation of fumes.
Work surface protection: Use a cutting mat or protective surface under your foam to avoid damaging your workspace.
Multiple sizes: Experiment with different tombstone sizes and thicknesses to create a varied graveyard scene.
Reuse and recycle: Leftover foam scraps can be used for smaller decorative elements like bones, pumpkins, or gravestone debris.
Weatherproofing tips: If your tombstones will be outdoors, seal them with a clear waterproof spray after painting to protect them from moisture and extend their lifespan.
By following these clear, simple steps and incorporating a bit of your own creativity, you’ll have custom Halloween tombstones that bring just the right amount of spooky flair to your decorations. Enjoy the crafting process and impress your friends and neighbors with your eerie, hand-made cemetery!

WHAT YOU GET:
This item is for the original media, and includes only the media (ie. CD, floppy ...) UNLESS specifically stated above and/or in the title. If more than just the media is included, it will state which items are (ie. box, manual, etc ). Items that come in a sleeve refer to a generic CD sleeve (typically white) and will be sent with shipping protection to avoid damage during transit. If available, we will also send the front and/or back CD inserts if in stock. If these are important to you, please message us to verify we have them available to send. Please do not assume items are included other than what's stated. Again, ask questions PRIOR to purchasing if you have any concerns.
IMAGES:
All images/pictures are stock photos and are for reference only, mainly to show the type of game you will be getting. Please read "WHAT YOU GET" for what is included with the media. Screenshots may vary based on your own computer system, video card, monitor, etc.
COMPATIBILITY:
Computers are like people, each one is different. Unlike console games, a computer game may install and work flawlessly on one system but may need adjustments on another. This is due to a variety of factors, mainly the OS platform running, video card you have, drivers, protection software installed, etc. Many times manufacturers release updates to games to fix bugs and add enhancements. We would be happy to help get the game going on your computer, but ultimately compatibility issues are the responsibility of the buyer. We suggest going to Google and searching for the name of the game along with the words "system requirements" to determine if your system is suitable. Ultimately, we are not responsible for software compatibility problems or publisher's errors.
PLATFORM:
Stated within the auction is what platform the game will work on (ie. Windows, Mac, Linux...) This is a generic statement and specific platform versions (ie. XP, Vista...) will have to be researched by the buyer. Games that came out PRIOR to XP or higher will not specifically state they will work on that release, but only because they came out before those versions were made. Many, if not most, will work on XP or higher with a few quick adjustments. We provide instructions with all items purchased on how to do this adjustment using the Program Compatibility Wizard. If we find out that an item will definately not work on a specific version, we will state it. For DOS games, you may need to play it with a free DOSbox program if the Program Compatibility Wizard does not work.
64-Bit Windows OS Systems:
For 64-bit Operating Systems, older games most likely will NOT work due to 64-bit systems not being able to run 16-bit programming code (most games prior to 2000). For DOS games, you may need to play it with a free DOSbox program.
Macintosh Systems:
For Macintosh programs, most older games will need to be run in Classic Environment if you have a MAC OS X 10.0 - 10.4 version. Please research Google on how to do this, or send us a message for information prior to purchasing. If your MAC OS system doesn't support Classic Environment (ie. MAC OS X 10.5 or Higher OR Intel Macs), you will have to try running it using the free program called SheepShaver, but compatibility is not ensured. Please research prior to purchasing or ask questions.
MEDIA FORMAT:
Please verify you have the required hardware in order to use the specified media (ie. CD, DVD, floppy drives, etc.) If the item comes as a floppy disc, make sure you have either the needed 3.5" floppy drive or the bigger and older 5.25" floppy drive.
RECOMMENDATIONS FOR A SMOOTH PURCHASE:
Ask questions PRIOR to purchasing an order to avoid any confusion.
Be patient if there are problems during installation or gameplay. Typically someone else has
already ran into that problem and has listed a solution online. Contact us and we will do our best to help.
Be sure to update your video card drivers and search for updates to the game from the manufacturer.
